CASE ANALYSIS (4)

Subjective reality is a collaborative project undertaken with photographer Miguel Roma.

Miguel was experimenting with light, blur and perspectives, creating sheer images of undefined forms and colors resulting in a collection of sensations rather than concrete pictures. There was no history behind those photographs, just personal experience through the camera. With no title and no particular order, they are just fragments of an experimentation process.

When the time came to think about how to present his work, the idea of emphasizing those sensations of oneiric visions was a common objective for both of us. We decided to print his photographs on semi-transparent paper, allowing the viewer to perceive further than the picture itself and giving light the chance to change the experience of seeing Miguel's work in just the same way as he did in taking them.

The book itself acts as a frame within which the collection of pieces can be manipulated by the viewer to get different atmospheres of light and color. With a 10x15 open space in both covers, instructions are given encouraging the user to play with combinations and place them against a light source to fully appreciate their powerful effect.

The sense of superposition of this transparent material is also part of the interaction, allowing the audience to feel and immerse themselves in this transparent superimposition. There are not too many textual statements or too many complicated pictures in the books, but this kind of presentation is still effective. Therefore, sometimes, the material is also part of the outstanding effect.
